RocksDB | A persistent key-value store for fast storage environments

Overview Wiki GitHub Get Started RocksDB is an embeddable persistent key-value store for fast storage. RocksDB can also be the foundation for a client-server database but our current focus is on embedded workloads. RocksDB builds on LevelDB to be scalable to run on servers with many CPU cores, to efficiently use fast storage, to support IO-bound, in-memory and write-once workloads, and to be flexible to allow for innovation. For more background on RocksDB, see Dhruba Borthakur's introductory talk from the Data @ Scale 2013 conference. We benchmarked LevelDB and found that it was unsuitable for our server workloads. The benchmark results look awesome at first sight, but we quickly realized that those results were for a database whose size was smaller than the size of RAM on the test machine - where the entire database could fit in the OS page cache. When we perf...

sta.li stali - static linux

sta.li stali - static linux home dwm st stali surf tools download source about faq filesystem masterplan sandbox technologies static linux is based on a hand selected collection of the best tools for each task and each tool being statically linked (including some X clients such as st, surf, dwm, dmenu), It also targets binary size reduction through the avoidance of glibc and other bloated GNU libraries where possible (early experiments show that statically linked binaries are usually smaller than their dynamically linked glibc counterparts!!!). Note, this is pretty much contrary to what Ulrich Drepper reckons about static linking. Due to the side-benefit that statically linked binaries start faster, the distribution also targets performance gains. Sta.li is still in a design phase. You can contribute by adding ideas to the sandbox or by working on the mast...

Defunct Soviet reconnaissance satellite may hit Earth today | Hacker News

Hacker News new | comments | ask | jobs | submit login Defunct Soviet reconnaissance satellite may hit Earth today (n2yo.com) 38 points by ColinWright 8 hours ago | 11 comments dTal 5 hours ago | link The site now has an infobox stating "It has been reported that COSMOS 1220 has reentered the atmospehere [sic]". No other reports that I can find, but this site[1] seems to have a lot of good info. Oddly, I get a completely different orbital inclination when I click on "To see where this object is expected to fall click here." (and, rather alarmingly, an impact site next to me) The main page and NORAD both agree however that it's currently still in orbit and currently somewhere around Cape Horn. It's hard to tell whether a particular map is using live data or extrapolating a stable trajectory. At this point I imagine there'd be a large discrepancy. [1] http://www.satview.org/decay.php...
