<![endif] Archive ← Return to Coinbase.com Blog Sep 16th, 2014 Introducing Toshi - An Open Source Bitcoin Node For Developers When we started Coinbase, we took a look at the Bitcoin Core open source project, and tried to decide how we could use it to build a web application. Bitcoin Core is a great reference implementation, but was never designed to query blockchain data in a flexible way (such as through a SQL database) or to scale to millions of users across dozens of servers. And so we built our own Bitcoin node to power Coinbase (which we’ve now scaled to 1.6M wallets). Today we’re happy to announce Toshi , the next generation of our Bitcoin node, has been open sourced. Toshi is a full Bitcoin node, that is 100% compatible with Bitcoin Core and makes it easy to build web applications. It provides an API to query blockchain data, is wr...

FIFTY YEARS AGO, when I was a boy of fifteen and helping to inhabit a Missourian village on the banks of the Mississippi, I had a friend whose society was very dear to me because I was forbidden by my mother to partake of it. He was a gay and impudent and satirical and delightful young black man -a slave -who daily preached sermons from the top of his master's woodpile, with me for sole audience. He imitated the pulpit style of the several clergymen of the village, and did it well, and with fine passion and energy. To me he was a wonder. I believed he was the greatest orator in the United States and would some day be heard from. But it did not happen; in the distribution of rewards he was overlooked. It is the way, in this world. He interrupted his preaching, now and then, to saw a stick of wood; but the sawing was a pretense -he did it with his mouth; exactly imitating the sound the b...

googleoff: index » Analysis & Opinion Home Opinion The Great Debate Follow The Great Debate googleon: index By Lynn Stuart Parramore August 29, 2013 Print productivity | vacation | worker satisfaction Life for the medieval peasant was certainly no picnic. His life was shadowed by fear of famine, disease and bursts of warfare. His diet and personal hygiene left much to be desired. But despite his reputation as a miserable wretch, you might envy him one thing: his vacations. Plowing and harvesting were backbreaking toil, but the peasant enjoyed anywhere from eight weeks to half the year off. The Church, mindful of how to keep a population from rebelling, enforced frequent mandatory holidays . Weddings, wakes and births might mean a week off quaffing ale to celebrate, and when wandering jugglers or sporting events came to town, th...

CentralNotice Corpus callosotomy From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation , search "Callosotomy" redirects here. It is not to be confused with Colostomy . Corpus callosotomy is a palliative surgical procedure for the treatment of seizures . As the corpus callosum is critical to the interhemispheric spread of epileptic activity , the procedure seeks to eliminate this pathway. “Efficacy and relatively low permanent morbidity in corpus callosotomy for medically intractable epilepsy have been demonstrated by more than six decades of experience. In addition to seizure reduction, behavior and quality of life may improve.” [ 1 ] The corpus callosum is usually severed in order to stop epileptic seizures. Once the corpus callosum is cut, the brain has much more difficulty sending messages between the hemispheres. Although the corpus callosum is the largest white ...

CentralNotice Clathrate gun hypothesis From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation , search Methane clathrate is released as gas into the surrounding water column or soils when ambient temperature increases The clathrate gun hypothesis is the popular name given to the hypothesis that rises in sea temperatures (and/or falls in sea level) can trigger the sudden release of methane from methane clathrate compounds buried in seabeds and permafrost which, because the methane itself is a powerful greenhouse gas , leads to further temperature rise and further methane clathrate destabilization – in effect initiating a runaway process as irreversible, once started, as the firing of a gun. [ 1 ] In its original form, the hypothesis proposed that the "clathrate gun" could cause abrupt runaway warming on a timescale less than a human lifetime, [ 1 ] and was respons...
