Uncool bro (gironsec.com) 143 points by uptown 1 hour ago | 61 comments dmix 49 minutes ago | link TLDR : Uber's Android app is literally malware Since the website is currently down, this person reverse-engineered Uber's Android app and discovered it has code that will "call home" aka send data back to Uber with your: - SMS list - call history - wifi connections - GPS location - every type of device fingerprint possible (device IDs) It also checks if you're phone is rooted/jailbroken and if it's vulnerable to Heartbleed... which it also calls home. From my understanding, which the author somehow missed, is that it is using http://www.inauth.com SDK which provides 'malware detection'. This SDK is popular in the 'mobile finance industry' and the banking sector. Also notably one of the founders is former...

Kill init by touching a bunch of files

Writing Software, technology, sysadmin war stories, and more. Monday, November 24, 2014 init is a pretty big deal on a Linux box. If you manage to kill it, the machine panics. Everything stops, and if you're lucky, it reboots by itself a few seconds or minutes later. Naturally, you'd like it to be stable and robust so that your machine doesn't go down. What if I told you I found a way to kill the "Upstart" init in RHEL and CentOS 6 with just a bunch of "touch" commands? Yep, it's true. You can even reproduce it in qemu. In fact, I had to do it in there in order to get these screenshots. Step 1: Create a new directory under /etc/init. I called mine "kill.the.box". Step 2: Fill that path with a few hundred or thousand files. I used 'touch $(seq 1 1000)' but do it however you like. Step 3: Kick off a bunch of changes to those files in parallel. As you can see her...

Pareidolia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CentralNotice Pareidolia From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation , search A satellite photo of a mesa in Cydonia, often called the Face on Mars . Later imagery from other angles did not contain the illusion. Pareidolia ( / p ær ɨ ˈ d oʊ l i ə / parr-i- DOH -lee-ə ) is a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound) being perceived as significant . Common examples include seeing images of animals or faces in clouds, the man in the moon or the Moon rabbit , and hearing hidden messages on records when played in reverse. The word comes from the Greek words para (παρά, "beside, alongside, instead") in this context meaning something faulty, wrong, instead of; and the noun eidōlon (εἴδωλον "image, form, shape") the diminutive of eidos . Pareidolia is a type of apophenia , seeing patterns in random data. ...

Running Mac OS X as a QEMU/KVM Guest

Last updated: Tue. Sep. 02, 2014 Feedback to: somlo at cmu dot edu 0. I Just Want It Working, Right Now ! OK, here's what you'll need (or skip to the technical details instead): Development Tools : git , gcc[-c++] , [auto]make , iasl , kernel-devel , etc. On Fedora, yum install @development-tools acpica-tools kernel-devel should take care of it. But, if following the rest of the directions below, you get weird build failures and other unexplained errors, consider the possibility that you're missing something in this category, possibly something I didn't think of listing explicitly above... KVM : As of kernel version 3.15, all necessary functionality is already integrated upstream. This article presents examples of such pipelines, highlights subtleties that arise when operations fail, and introduces techniques for dealing with failures cleanly. There's no formal definition of a pipeline in Go; it's just one of many kinds of concurrent programs. Informally, a pipeline is a series of stages connected by channels, where each stage is a group of goroutines running the same ...
