Sofa: CouchApp Blog Engine Atom feeds of posts & comments . 2013-02-27T19:20:55.747Z There's relatively big news in my small corner of the world. My family is moving back to Portland, Oregon. Amy and I lived there for eleven years before moving to the Bay Area. We've learned a lot from the Bay Area, and we don't regret spending time here, but we're excited to return to the city that feels like home to us. One of the things we learned is how unique Portland is. It's hard to find human-scale walkable and bikeable communities in the Bay Area, and while there are a few pockets, they are small pockets in an overall car culture, where it's considered normal to drive more than a half hour just to see friends. I'm looking forward to selling my car and getting an awesome cargo bike . There's been a lot of noise lately about working remotely. I'm about to start a personal experiment...

Jane Street
_Tech Blog
Thu, 2014/06/26 - 7:21am - Yaron Minsky | OCaml We've just kicked off an internal distributed-systems seminar. Our inaugral paper was Lamport's classic "Time, Clocks and the Ordering of Events in a Distributed System" . I remembered the paper fondly, but hadn't looked back it it for more than a decade. Going back and reading it carefully was a fun experience, and I realized that I hadn't really understood the paper properly at the time. Maybe that's not surprising --- Lamport himself likes to complain that no one really understands the main contribution of the paper, which from his perspective is the introduction of state machine replication. (As a side note, If you come to think that everyone has missed what you believe to be the main point of your paper, you should consider th...
