Fragmentation Needed: Dispatches From The Trading Floor - MoldUDP

Fragmentation Needed corrects IE6 width calculation google_ad_section_start(name=default) Tuesday, January 3, 2012 Dispatches From The Trading Floor - MoldUDP My pricing networks post has gotten a lot of feedback . Because of its popularity, I've decided to write up a case study detailing one of the interesting problems I was asked to solve. The Incident One morning around 10:00, a pricing support guy cornered me in the hallway: "Hey, did something happen at 9:34 this morning? We lost some data on the NASDAQ ITCH feed... Did you notice anything?" When I got back to my desk, I found that pricing support had left some feed handler logs in my inbox. The logs explained that three consecutive pricing updates had been los...

Fragmentation Needed: Pricing and Trading Networks: Down is Up, Left is Right

Fragmentation Needed corrects IE6 width calculation google_ad_section_start(name=default) Tuesday, December 20, 2011 Pricing and Trading Networks: Down is Up, Left is Right My introduction to enterprise networking was a little backward. I started out supporting trading floors, backend pricing systems, low-latency algorithmic trading systems, etc... I got there because I'd been responsible for UNIX systems producing and consuming multicast data at several large financial firms. Inevitably, the firm's network admin folks weren't up to speed on matters of performance tuning, multicast configuration and QoS, so that's where I focused my attention. One of these firms offered me a job with the word "network" in the title, a...

Yet despite that, I still often find myself using the humble notebook to jot down valuable ideas, especially when I'm on the go. However notebooks are hard to organize your ideas. You either split your notebook into several sections for each 'category' and end up wasting valuable pages in the quieter sections or you just write your ideas as they come along making them hard to find later on. If this sounds familiar then you are going to love this little hack I was taught here in ...

The little ssh that (sometimes) couldn't - Mina Naguib

Mina Naguib This is a technical article chronicling one of the most interesting bug hunts I’ve had the pleasure of chasing down. At AdGear Technologies Inc. where I work, ssh is king. We use it for management, monitoring, deployments, log file harvesting, even real-time event streaming. It’s solid, reliable, has all the predictability of a native unix tool, and just works. Until one day, random cron emails started flowing about it not working. The machines in our London data center were randomly failing to send their log files to our data machines in our Montreal data center. This job is initiated periodically from cron, and the failure manifested itself as: cron emails stating that the ssh was unsuccessful Sometimes hangs Sometimes exits with a timeout error nagios warnings down the line for in-house sanity checks detecting the missing data in Montreal We logged into t...

The case of the 500-mile email

Read the FAQ about the story. The following is the 500-mile email story in the form it originally appeared, in a post to sage-members on Sun, 24 Nov 2002.: From trey@sage.org Fri Nov 29 18:00:49 2002 Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 21:03:02 -0500 (EST) From: Trey Harris <trey@sage.org> To: sage-members@sage.org Subject: The case of the 500-mile email (was RE: [SAGE] Favorite impossible task?) Here's a problem that *sounded* impossible... I almost regret posting the story to a wide audience, because it makes a great tale over drinks at a conference. :-) The story is slightly altered in order to protect the guilty, elide over irrelevant and boring details, and generally make the whole thing more entertaining. I was working in a job running the campus email system some years ago when I got a call from the chairman of the statistics department. "We're having a problem sending email ...
