The reason is that Mac OS X uses the BSD version command line tools, which are different from the Linux version, while they are both compliant with POSIX standards. But we can easily install the GNU tools by using Homebrew in Mac OS X and set them as default. Note: you need to notice that you may have some compatibility issues with shell scripts written specifically for OS X after you have replaced your OS X commands with the GNU version. Although the very vast majority of shell scripts have no problem, you just need to be aware that when there comes a problem, this may be ...

Though such butte-like features are common in star-forming regions, the M16 structures are by far the most photogenic and evo...

The Setup What do people use to get stuff done? Interviews Community About Ads Via The Deck Software developer (Debian, git-annex) Posted October 30, 2012. developer linux software I'm Joey Hess and I write programs. Lately I've been focusing on programs that encourage broader use of version control systems, like git . The goal is to harness all the power that's been developed by developers for developers for managing source code, and redirect it to other purposes. So I've built etckeeper (managing /etc with git, for sysadmins), ikiwiki (wikis and blogs in git), and git-annex (applying git to very large files). I'm funded by a Kickstarter project in 2012-2013 to build something not unlike DropBox , based on git-annex, that automatically version controls and syncs files between computers. I'm also a long-time Debian developer, having been involved in b...

Yipit Django Blog Blog Archives Menu Blog Archives Twitter GitHub RSS The first in a short series of Chef related blog posts Imagine this everyday occurrence: You are writing a Chef cookbook You need to download the source code of a program as a tarball. Being the good programmer you are, you use for Chef’s remote_file resource. You grab the checksum of the file from the website and add it to the resource. Everything is good right? Unfortunately not. The Chef remote_file resource does have a checksum property, but it is not meant as a security measure. Instead it is implemented as a bandwidth saving property. If the checksum does not match, it will download the new version but no further validation will be done to match it with the checksum. Here is an example of using a standard remote_file callback pattern to download and install from source...
