When the company started, we chose PHP as our application server language, in part, because the founders expected the website to only be a small part of the business! IMVU was primarily about a downloadable 3D client. We needed “a website or something” to give users a place to download our client from, but didn’t expect it would have to be much more than that. This shows that predicting the future is hard. Years later, we have quite a lot of customers, and we primarily use PHP to serve them. We’re big enough that we run multiple subteams on separate i...

Larry Land About Apr 12, 2015 How to use EC2 GPU machines + Steam In-Home Streaming + a VPN to play AAA titles on a shitty laptop You might have tried a service like the now defunct OnLive . Though personally I’ve played and beat many AAA games on the service, it unfortunately a) had a very limited selection and b) is now gone. I also have a bunch of games on Steam that I’ve played using my eGPU . With the new Macbook though, I won’t be able to continue my low-end-laptop but high-end gaming extravaganza since there’s no Thunderbolt. So why am I not concerned? Steam recently introduced In-Home Streaming , which basically creates a mini-OnLive in your own home with all the same Steam games I played with my eGPU. But… let’s do it over the Internet! Playing games this way is actually quite economical – especially when comparing to purchasing a full-on gaming ...

Monash University Clayton 3168, Australia mailto:damian@csse.monash.edu.au http://www.csse.monash.edu.a u/~damian Abstract This paper describes a Perl module -- Lingua::Romana::Perligata -- that makes it possible to write Perl programs in Latin. A plausible rationale for wanting to do such a thing is provided, along with a comprehensive overview of the syntax and semantics of Latinized Perl. The paper also explains the special source filtering and parsing techniques required to efficiently interpret a programming language in which the syntax is (largely) non-positional. Compared to other languages (both modern and ancient), English has a comparatively weak lexical structure. Much of the grammatical load of an English sentence is carried by positional cues. A statement such as ``The boy gave the dog the food'' only makes sense because of the convention that the subject prec...
Home About Byteworm Still couldn䂟t figure out Unicode. Programming Programming blog Projects Current projects Github Github Projects by bysin on 2010-11-21 Programming Mat and I were scanning through github one day and a pretty lengthy, complex piece of code caught our eye ( Caution : Do not read if you’re prone to seizures or have a heart condition). This code is one of the many intricacies involved in mono’s bytecode interpreter, and it was beautiful, at least to us. Why must it be so complex? How hard can it be? After a lengthy discussion, we decided the best thing to do at this point was have a competition to see which one of us can write the fastest VM bytecode interpreter in two hours. A few insults later ( “Your mother’s filesystem is so fat etc.” ), we decided to set a few ground rules and agree on a benchmark. I came up with a pretty simple piece of c...
