The Computer Language Benchmarks Game vs C vs C++ vs Go vs Java Back in April 2010, Russ Cox charitably suggested that only fannkuch-redux, fasta, k-nucleotide, mandlebrot, nbody, reverse-complement and spectral-norm were close to fair comparisons. As someone who implemented programming languages, his interest was "measuring the quality of the generated code when both compilers are presented with what amounts to the same program." Differences in approach - to memory management, parallel programming, regex, arbitrary precision arithmetic, implementation technique - don't fit in that kind-of fair comparison — but we still have to deal with them. These are only the fastest programs. There may be additional measurements for programs which seem more-like a fair comparison to you. Always look at the source code. n-body source secs mem gz busy cpu load Rust 5.71 872...

Menu Home Blog About Us Work Content Contact Us Advertisment A good friend of mine, Ian , recently forwarded me an internet joke. The headline was something like: “All credit card PIN numbers in the World leaked” The body of the message simply said 0000 0001 0002 0003 0004 … Ian’s messages made me chuckle. Then, later the same day, I read this XKCD cartoon . The merging of these two humorous topics created the seed for this article. I love Randall’s work. My favorite, to date, is this one . I have a signed copy of it on my office wall. Like many of his creations, this cartoon is excellent at bifurcating readers; people read it, then either smile and chuckle, or stare blankly at it followed by a “Huh? I don’t get it!” comment. Then you explain it, and get a reply “Yeeaaaaaa…no, I still don’t get it!” Esoteric humor in action. ...

If not, skip the video and read on. “The cost of JavaScript” as presented by Addy Osmani at #PerfMatters Conference 2019. One large change to the cost of JavaScript over the last few years has been an improvement in how fast browsers can parse and compile script. In 2019, the dominant costs of processing scripts are now download and CPU execution time. User interaction can be delayed if the browser’s main thread is busy executing JavaScript, so optimizing bottlenecks with script execution time and network can be impactful. # What does this mean for web developers? Parse & compile costs are no longer as slow as we once thought. The three things to focus on for JavaScript bundles are: Impro...
