Git tips from the trenches

Ochronus About me RSS Git tips from the trenches Facebook Twitter Google+ February 1, 2014 by Csaba Okrona I've gathered a handful of these with varying complexity hoping that it can give a boost to you. I will not cover git or VCS basics at all, I'm assuming you're already a git-addict. So fire up your favorite text editor and bear with me. After a while if you branch a lot you'll se your git branch -a output is polluted like hell (if you havent't cleaned up). It all the more true if you're in a team. So, from time to time you'll do the Big Spring Cleaning only to find it hard to remember which branch you can delete and which you shouldn't. Well, just check out your mainline branch (usually master) and: $ git checkout master $ git branch --merged to see all the branches that have already been merged to the current branch (master in...

While its still going, which means there could still be more great features to come, we can start to take a look at what you can expect from it now. This release seems to bring a lot of minor increments versus some bigger highlights of previous ones. At the same time there’s still a lot on the bubble that may or may not make it which could entirely change the shape of this one. Big changes to Erlang

Joe Armstrong - Erlang and other stuff Home Archive Resources Installing Links Source 01 Feb 2014 Yesterday release candidate 1 of version R17 of Erlang was released. This was a major event. Version R17 has some changes to Erlang that significantly improve the language. These are the biggest changes since the introduction of higher order functions and list comprehensions. Erlang now has maps and named arguments in funs. We’ve been talking about maps for over twelve years, but now they are here to stay. Why the long wait? - we wanted maps to be a replacement for records and to be as efficient as records, and its not blindingly obvious how to do so. In the remainder of this article I’ll explain some of the new features in Erlang version R17. Records are dead - long live maps ! Maps are associative collections of key-value pairs. In Perl and Ruby they are called...

It was a raw clip from a news helicopter filming a police chase in Kansas City, Missouri. I quickly noticed a weird interference in the audio, especially the left channel, and thought it must be caused by the chopper's engine. I turned up the volume and realized it's not interference at all, but a mysterious digital signal! And off we went again. (Here, a HTML5 audio element used to be) The signal sits alone on the left audio channel, so I ca...

(wolframalpha.com) 491 points by rsiqueira 13 hours ago | 80 comments crntaylor 13 hours ago | link The pattern will break down once you get past 8192, which is 2^13. That means that the pattern continues for an impressive 52 significant figures (well, it actually breaks down on the 52nd digit, which will be a 3 instead of a 2). The reason it works is that 9998 = 10^4 - 2. You can expand as 1 / (10^n - 2) = 1/10^n * 1/(1 - 2/10^n) = 1/10^n * (1 + 2/10^n + 2^2 /10^2n + 2^3 /10^3n + ...) which gives the observed pattern. It breaks down when 2^k has more than n digits, which happens approximately when 2^k > 10^n => k > n log(10) / log(2) which comes out to 4 * log(10)/log(2) = 13.28 when n = 4. --- Another pattern can be generated from the power serie...
