by Simon Tatham This article attempts to give a sort of ‘orientation tour’ for people whose previous programming background is in high (ish) level languages such as Java or Python, and who now find that they need or want to learn C. C is quite different, at a fundamental level, from languages like Java and Python. However, well-known books on C (such as the venerable Kernighan & Ritchie) tend to have been written before Java and Python changed everyone's expectations of a programming language, so they might well not stop to explain the fundamental differences in outlook before getting into the nitty-gritty language details. Someone with experience of higher-level languages might therefore suffer a certain amount of culture shock when picking up such a book. My aim is to help prevent that, by warning about the culture shocks in advance. This article will not actually teach C: I'...
duplicity Main Features FAQ Documentation Hosting User Contrib Acknowledgments rdiff-backup Replace tar? Links duplicity Encrypted bandwidth-efficient backup using the rsync algorithm What is it? Duplicity backs directories by producing encrypted tar-format volumes and uploading them to a remote or local file server. Because duplicity uses librsync , the incremental archives are space efficient and only record the parts of files that have changed since the last backup. Because duplicity uses GnuPG to encrypt and/or sign these archives, they will be safe from spying and/or modification by the server. The duplicity package also includes the rdiffdir utility. Rdiffdir is an extension of librsync's rdiff to directories---it can be used to produce signatures and deltas of directories as well as regular files. These signatures and deltas are in GNU tar format. Current dev...

Who says you can't teach a 54-year-old dog some new tricks? ;) COBOL on Wheelchair is a minimal webframework\^H\^H\^H\^H\^H\^H just a proof of concept. However, it partially works, and it can handle: routing; PATH variables (GET and POST on the way...); basic templating. In order to run COBOL on Wheelchair you will need: some http server; GNU COBOL [sudo apt-get install open-cobol]; ability to run cgi-bin . 1. Download: git clone https://github.com/azac/cobol-on-wheelchair 2. Configure URL rewriting COBOL on Wheelchair comes with .htaccess file for Apache. If you're on Linux and all goes well, you shoudn't need to worry about that. I made a complete operating system including making the tools. It has a kernel and 64-bit compiler. It also has an oracle for talking with God. My PC is a Windows 7 desktop with an i7, 3.40GHz CPU, 8GB of RAM. It's a Dell. I have a Sony stand-alone hand-held voice recorder. I do almost all of my development in TempleOS with my own compiler, editor and tools. I use Windows for browsing the web with Internet Explorer . I use Windows to help make videos for TempleOS. In TempleOS, I capture BMP files while recording my voice on the hand-held voice recorder. I us...

I'm responsible for different parts of the Linux kernel as a maintainer (USB, driver core, staging area, other various bits), and I do the Linux kernel stable releases every week or so, taking the bug fixes from the latest development tree and backporting them to the last released kernel for all to use. I started the Linux Driver Project many years ago while I was working at Novell/SuSE which provides free Linux drivers for any company that wants them. That project still continues today, writing a handful of new drivers every yea...

Ads Via The Deck Software developer (Debian, git-annex) Posted October 30, 2012. developer linux software I'm Joey Hess and I write programs. Lately I've been focusing on programs that encourage broader use of version control systems, like git . The goal is to harness all the power that's been developed by developers for developers for managing source code, and redirect it to other purposes. So I've built etckeeper (managing /etc with git, for sysadmins), ikiwiki (wikis and blogs in git), and git-annex (applying git to very large files). I'm funded by a Kickstarter project in 2012-2013 to build something not unlike DropBox , based on git-annex, that automatically version controls and syncs files between computers. I'm al...
propellor: property-based host configuration management in haskell Edit RecentChanges History Preferences Branchable Install API documentation Sample config file Security Todo Forum Propellor is a configuration management system using Haskell and Git. Each system has a list of properties, which Propellor ensures are satisfied. Propellor is configured via a git repository, which typically lives in ~/.propellor/ on your development machine. Propellor clones the repository to each host it manages, in a secure way. The git repository contains the full source code to Propellor, along with its config file. Properties are defined using Haskell. Edit ~/.propellor/config.hs to get started. There is fairly complete API documentation , which includes many built-in Properties for dealing with Apt and Apache , Cron and Commands , Dns and Docker , etc. There is no s...
